About Us
Our Family & Our Hospital
Gaslight Square Animal Hospital is a family-owned veterinary hospital serving Jeffersontown and the surrounding communities. Our practice is built on long-term relationships, consistency, and a shared belief that veterinary care is at its best when trust comes first.
Our hospital is led by Dr. Tom Berge and Dr. Sara Berge, a father-and-daughter team who work side by side caring for dogs and cats in our community. Being family-run allows us to practice with continuity and intention. Many of our clients see the same familiar doctors year after year, building relationships that grow alongside their pets.
This hospital reflects our family’s values, our reputation, and our commitment to the people and pets who trust us with their care.
Our Approach to Care
At Gaslight Square, we believe in showing up every day and doing the work the right way. We take time with our clients, listen carefully, and explain recommendations clearly. We say yes whenever possible, and when limitations exist, we communicate honestly so families can make informed decisions with confidence.
We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all medicine. Instead, we focus on practical, thoughtful, and individualized care—guided by experience, respect, and realism. Our goal is to support pets and their families through every stage of life while maintaining the trust that long-term relationships require.
What You Can Expect From Us
When you choose Gaslight Square Animal Hospital, you can expect familiarity, consistency, and open communication. You’ll work with doctors who know your pet’s history, understand your goals, and value long-term relationships over quick decisions.
Pets are not just patients here—they are family, and they are treated with the same care and respect we give our own.
Our Doctors
Dr. Tom Berge
Dr. Tom Berge earned his undergraduate degree from Eastern Kentucky University and graduated from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1984. He began his career at Shively Animal Hospital, where he practiced for five years before opening his own practice in March of 1989.
Over decades of practice, Dr. Berge has become known for his hands-on, compassionate approach to care and for building long-term relationships with the families he serves. Earlier in his career, he was the veterinarian who would get down on the floor with a nervous patient to help them feel safe and understood. While he may not move quite as easily as he once did, that same patience and commitment continue to guide his work.
Dr. Berge is especially respected for his skill in soft tissue procedures and growth removals, bringing experience, precision, and practicality to each case. He takes great pride in the hospital he built and in the fact that he now gets to work alongside his family every day. Being surrounded by his children, son-in-law, and grandchildren—who often stop by the hospital—is a source of joy and a reminder of why this practice has always been about people as much as it is about pets.
Dr. Sara Berge
Dr. Sara Berge earned her undergraduate degree from Eastern Kentucky University and graduated from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. During her training, she had opportunities to pursue more specialized paths, but she chose general practice intentionally—drawn to the long-term relationships and continuity she grew up seeing and continues to value today.
Working alongside her father, Dr. Sara saw firsthand the value of long-term client relationships and the confidence that comes from truly knowing a patient’s history over time. That perspective continues to shape her approach to medicine.
Dr. Sara is known for her methodical yet practical approach to care, with particular focus on developing chronic disease management plans that are realistic, sustainable, and tailored to each pet and family. She places strong importance on helping clients understand their options, especially when decisions feel difficult or overwhelming.
Above all, Dr. Sara strives to make clients feel supported and confident in the plan moving forward. Her commitment to thoughtful care, follow-through, and honest communication plays a central role in the long-term relationships that define Gaslight Square Animal Hospital.
